In the time of the early church, Christian thinkers engaged with the terms, ideas and problems of Greek philosophy, in a way reminiscent of that in which theologians today engage with modern science and popular culture. In this series of public lectures, you will encounter three diverse and striking examples of how Christians in the ancient world brought their faith into conversation with the Greek philosophical tradition.

The course is led by Professor Vrasidas Karalis, Professor Bronwen Neil and Dr Samuel Kaldas (Centre for the History of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame Australia).

Session dates — Mondays, 6:00–8:00pm:

  • Monday 17 August 2026 — From the Affirmative Vision of Ancient Greek Philosophy to the Apophatic Character of Byzantine Mysticism
  • Monday 24 August 2026 — The Wisdom of the Desert: The Desert Christians and Philosophy as a Way of Life
  • Monday 21 September 2026 — ‘Neither Male nor Female’: Christ and Gender in the Cappadocians and Maximus

Venue: The Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady, 242 Cleveland St, Redfern NSW
