Thomas Gueydier, postulator for the cause for canonisation of French YCW martyr Blessed Marcel Callo and author of a new book on the subject, will be the speaker for the next Australian Cardijn Institute webinar at 7pm AEST on Tuesday 9 September 2025.
Born in 1921, Marcel Callo was an apprentice printer, who became a leader of the Young Christian Workers (YCW) movement in the city of Rennes. After France was occupied during the Second World War, he was sent to Germany under a compulsory (forced) labour program.
He made it his mission to reach out to his fellow deported workers, helping to sustain them and their faith in the face of the difficulties they faced.
Regarded as “too Catholic” by the Nazi authorities, Marcel was imprisoned and eventually sent to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where he died after much suffering on 19 March 1945.
Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1987. In 2023, Pope Francis made him a patron of World Youth Day in Portugal.
