SUMMARY:St Thomas More Parish and Forum Annual Dinner 2025
DESCRIPTION:Pope Francis appointed Fr Tony Percy as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Sydney and his episcopal consecration was celebrated on Friday\, 2 May 2025 at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney. \nBorn in Sydney in 1962\, Fr Percy moved to Cooma with his family in 1966. He was ordained in December 1990 and served in multiple parishes across New South Wales\, including Young\, Queanbeyan\, Ariah Park\, Ardlethan\, and Barellan. After theological studies in the United States\, he became parish priest in Goulburn before being invited by Cardinal George Pell in 2008 to lead the Seminary of the Good Shepherd in Sydney. \nReturning to Canberra in 2015\, Fr Percy became vicar-general of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn during which time he also served as Parish Priest in Wanniassa and Queanbeyan. He has been a strong advocate for religious freedom\, leading the Save Calvary campaign against the ACT Government’s 2023 takeover of Calvary Hospital. Under his leadership\, the Archdiocesan “Save Calvary” campaign gathered over 50\,000 signatures\, underscoring his commitment to defending religious freedom and property rights. \nSynopsis \nWhat guarantee do ordinary Australians\, who publicly profess faith have about their human and property rights? \nThe ACT government made a compulsory\, unjust\, acquisition of Calvary Public Hospital in Canberra on 3 July 2023. \nThe federal government had invited Calvary to start the hospital in 1979. It was granted a 120 year lease. The acquisition was done not according to the ACT property act but rather through legislation\, pushed through by the labor-Green’s ACT government. What does this mean for other faith based and private institutions\, not only in the health sector\, but education too?
