SUMMARY:Good sport: Professional learning for AC Education Hub subscribing teachers
DESCRIPTION:Sport is a significant part of Australian culture and life. Each weekend\, millions of people around the country take part in healthy competition on playing fields and courts\, or watch professionals battle it out on their TV screens. Sport has become a place where people find meaning and inspiration in how they live\, and where conversations about broader social issues can play out on the field and in the media. So how can we bring together sports and faith in the RE classroom? How can faith help us discern how to be better sports? How can we encourage students to explore issues related to morality and social justice more deeply through the lens of sport? Join us for an engaging conversation exploring these and other issues in our first professional learning session for this year. \nGuest presenters:\nMalcolm Hart – Malcolm is the Director of the National Centre for Evangelisation (NCE) and the Catholic Enquiry Centre\, and has over 25 years of experience in evangelisation and youth ministry in Australia. He is one of the contributors to the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference’s statement\, ‘Open the Way to Christ: Fostering a Pastoral Ministry of Sport’\, and has developed a range of resources through the NCE helping Catholic communities see how sport can be a tool for community outreach and evangelisation\, including via sports chaplaincy.  In 2023\, Malcolm was appointed as the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference nominated liaison for the pastoral care of sports with the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education\, meeting in the dicastery in 2024 with staff and other nominated leaders from around the world. \nMichael McVeigh – Michael is the Head of Publishing for Jesuit Communications\, and has written regularly about faith through the lens of sport in both Australian Catholics and Eureka Street. He sees sport as a helpful lens to engage people in discussions about their relationship with God\, and also sees faith as a helpful lens to talk about moral and ethical issues that often arise out of sports. \nFacilitator: Laura Kings – Laura is an experienced teacher in English\, Media Studies and Religious Education\, with a strong interest in creating quality classroom resources. She is also an experienced journalist with a background in radio and print.
