A national event where those involved with initial and ongoing diaconate formation in Australia can learn from key speakers, research undertaken recently of the diaconate community and each other on their successes and challenges.
The gathering is organised by the Australian Catholic Deacons Association and the Clergy Life & Ministry team at the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference with an organising team from Queensland coordinating this year’s program.
The gathering will be held from 18-20 November 2025 at Mary MacKillop Place, 7-11 Mount Street, North Sydney, NSW 2060 commencing at 5pm on Tuesday, 18th November, and concluding on Thursday, 20th November, after lunch.

For those unable to attend in person, a key session will be accessible via webinar on on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, at 3:30 p.m. ADST (Sydney time), where representatives from Brisbane, Cairns, and Rockhampton will share how a formation collaboration model works for them — and how other dioceses and formation providers might contribute to and benefit from similar initiatives.
The session will cover:
• How Brisbane structures and delivers formation online
• How Cairns and Rockhampton accompany and support their candidates locally
• Benefits for smaller dioceses engaging in shared formation
• Ways that larger dioceses and providers can extend their programs to serve the wider Church
• Lessons learned in building a model of collaboration
Our hope is to spark a wider conversation that enables every diocese, regardless of size or resources, to provide a credible path of formation for the permanent diaconate.
We look forward to your participation as we explore together how collaboration can strengthen the mission of the diaconate in Australia.
