The exodus was one of the fundamental events that came to define God’s people. It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that the rest of the Bible was written as a reaction to God’s decision to rescue Israel from Egypt in the exodus. Understanding the exodus helps unlock the whole Bible. Even the gospels draw on the exodus. In this subject, we’ll raise some of the key questions about the exodus and think about the different ways that people have interpreted the book of Exodus. We’ll also think about what the book of Exodus means in a Christian context and how the gospel writers used Exodus ideas to make sense of Jesus’ life.
